About the Opportunity
Epsilon’s Analytic Consulting Group is seeking a Data Analyst to join its growing team. The Analytic Consulting Group partners with both internal and external clients, and data providers, leveraging predictive analytics and advanced statistical techniques to drive strategic thought and effective decision making. The Data Analyst is responsible for conducting data analyses using SAS/SQL and other resources in support of a variety of analytic solutions.

Essential Functions

  • Identifies and may develop analytical and data mining solutions to understand key business behaviors such as: customer acquisition, product up-sell, customer retention, lifetime value, channel preferences, customer satisfaction and loyalty drivers, etc
  • Consults with business users to ensure that analytical solutions are tailored to business needs and will support or result in actionable customer strategies; participates in a consultative role in implementing solutions
  • Creates and maintains project plans, project schedules, and other documentation, including sampling or experimental design plans
  • Creates test designs and determines sample sizes, etc., for marketing campaigns
  • Provides project-specific guidance to other team members in performing analyses
  • Leverages information design concepts and principles to create compelling and effective charts, tables, presentations and other visuals that convey analytical results clearly and effectively
  • Presents results to clients
  • Recommends and implements strategies to achieve marketing goals for assigned products and services for one or more areas, product lines, or market segments
  • Supports the development of RFPs responses/RFIs for analytic engagements
  • Consults with clients on capturing and leveraging customer data across areas of the business
  • Document and articulate steps taken in an analysis to project managers/answer questions about data sets and analyses
  • Become familiar and comply with the group’s policies and procedures for programming, project documentation, and system management
  • Prepares basic report content including writing covering methodology and findings based on the observed patterns within data
  • May serve as project manager on analyses
  • May QC data and results provided by less experienced peers
  • May create detailed project documentation and analyses of marketing and promotional effectiveness, measuring the value of analytical solutions and reinforcing the value proposition of data mining
  • May track project resources and progress against task plan to ensure on-time and on-budget project delivery
  • May track data and other issues and document client communications to ensure that client expectations are managed appropriately and deadlines are negotiated appropriately
  • May present analytic findings to account teams and clients

Knowledge & Skills

  • Good project management skills
  • Able to show value of analytics within business processes
  • Good SAS skills
  • Understanding of and appropriate application of the following analytical concepts:
    • Cox/proportional hazards
    • Decision tree analysis
    • Mathematical programming and optimization
    • Neural networks, genetic algorithms, and other computational methods
    • Regression (linear, logistic, multinomial, and censored)
    • Segmentation and clustering
    • Test Design/Design of experiments
  • Good knowledge and the following:
    • Bayesian analysis
    • Conjoint analysis
    • Information design/presentation development
    • Principal component analysis
    • Structural equations modeling
    • Time series analysis and forecasting, smoothing techniques
  • Able to implement analytics in business processes
  • Solid quantitative background including proficiency in problem solving, data analysis and modeling
  • Good understanding of current analytic technologies including: SAS, UNIX and JCL
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills a must

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide SAS/SQL programming, with detailed direction, in the execution of data analysis that will contribute to the final project deliverables
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to manage data logistics - including data transfers, understanding data structures, business rules, etc. - to enable project execution
  • QA/QC data and report output to ensure accuracy
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Monitor project progress relative to timeline and scope

Technical Requirements

  • Demonstrated proficiency in SAS/SQL programming; minimum of 2 years
  • 1-3 years of professional experience with data mining, segmentation, and/or predictive modeling using large marketing databases
  • Good understanding of UNIX and JCL
  • Ability to program in newer and emerging languages such as R and Python; working knowledge of Hadoop and other big data technologies a plus
  • Netezza and Oracle experience a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • Database marketing and experience a plus


  • Requires up to 18 months of related experience


  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field required
  • Master’s degree in a quantitative field preferred
